Good Oral Hygiene
et’s talk about Good Oral Hygiene
Teaching your child about proper oral hygiene can be fun and easy! Let’s start with the Tooth Fairy’s favorite activity, Brushing!
There are several ways to make brushing fun:
1. Allow your child to choose a toothbrush
There is a wide variety of toothbrush styles available as close as the nearest drugstore. As far as what type, the Tooth Fairy recommends soft bristles. There are several designs to choose from also. Whether you choose an electric, battery operated or manual brush is up to you and your child.
2. Teach Techniques & keep it FUN
Ready, set, brush! Use a pea-size amount of fluoride paste to brush the surface of each tooth, using a circular motion. Cover each tooth from all angles. Be sure to get the back, front, chewing surface and the gum tissue. Remember to brush your tongue too!
Done properly, brushing time should take about 5 minutes, so keep it FUN by setting up some tunes in the bathroom.. most songs last about 5 minutes or less. Some other suggestions could be telling a story or reading a book to your child. This will make brushing time something to look forward to.
3. Floss Daily
Flossing removes plaque and build up between teeth and under the gum line, before it hardens into tarter. Like the children’s toothbrushes and toothpastes, there is a wide selection of flavored and colorful dental flosses to choose from. Try to include the child when shopping for these items so they will be more excited to use them.
As with any children’s activity, there is some parental supervision required. Don’t forget to help your child brush occasionally, just to be sure that they are doing a good job. Then open up and let your child brush your teeth too! If they are resistant to your help, you may try bringing a stuffed animal or a doll in for a pretend brushing. There are so many ways to make brushing fun, just be creative. If you need more ideas, remember that in todays world there is always “An App for That”! Let’s Keep Oral Hygiene fun & maintain that beautiful smile!
